Trying to figure what to give Mom on her special day? Treat her to something that pampers her by making her day a little easier.

Not only quick and easy, the following ideas for Mother's Day are also easy on the pocketbook. Why not try one or two?

  • Treat Mom to a pampering breakfast in bed on a tray by converting a simple wooden tray into a footed one by simply screwing in curtain finials in each corner of the tray bottom.

  • If Mom is the chief family dog walker, fill a new clothespin bag with clean plastic sacks from the grocery store, and hang it by the dog’s leash. Next time she takes the family pooch out, she won’t have to search high and low for a plastic bag. Better still, take the dog out and let Mom snooze for at least one Sunday in the year. This is also a great idea for the kitchen, car, garage, or anywhere Mom has to make quick cleanups.

  • If she likes to hang out the wash to dry the old fashioned way, outside on a line, why not present her with a jarful of scented clothespins. To make scented clothespins, dampen a paper towel and then sprinkle with a few drops of her favourite essential oil such as lavender. Place in the bottom of a clean jar and add the clothespins. Replace the lid and put the jar in a sunny spot for a day or two. Remove the paper towel before presenting to Mom.

  • If cooking is her thing, make some flavoured salts and sugars. Simply add a few sprigs of fresh herbs (lavender, rosemary, or tarragon are nice) or lemon or orange peels into a jarful of sugar or salt. Close the lid and add a pretty ribbon and label.

  • If Mom’s a reader, light up her favourite reading area with a pretty lampshade decorated with her initials. You can cover a store-bought lampshade with a monogrammed vintage linen napkin or you can simply glue on a purchased cloth initial (available at fabric stores) onto to a plain lampshade.

  • What Mom wouldn’t love a kitchen herb garden – especially one with her name on it? Get an adult to help shape the word Mom (or her initials) from wire coat hangers and then stick the letters into a small wooden box planted with her favourite herbs (buy small pots of already growing herbs at a garden centre). Then carefully wrap the growing plants around each letter.
With all the money saved, why not treat Mom to some of her favourite flowers and/or candy. What Mother can resist those!
