Why not surprise Mom on Mother's Day with something different from the usual flowers, perfume, or chocolates? Something fun but also useful!

Why not make her a coat rack? Now, that may not sound too exciting or interesting, but it suddenly becomes fun when the usual hooks or pegs are replaced with, of all things, high heels. Not the shoes, just the heels.

When mounted on brightly colored wooden tiles and fastened to a hallway wall or behind a bedroom or bathroom door. Mom will smile with delight every time she hangs up her things. The number of heels “racks” can be only one or two for her bedroom or bathroom door, or half a dozen for a hallway. When done, place in horizontal or vertical rows, or create more interesting patterns.

Paint the wooden tiles in her favorite colors; add a small, surprise gift or a mini bouquet. Mom is sure to be pleased with this gift.

This is an easy and quick project to do; one that both kids and adults can make together. Kids can paint the tiles, and the entire family can decide where to hang them.

Raid Mom’s closet for shoes she never wears (check with her first — just ask if she has any she’s planning to throw out but don’t tell her why). You can also buy heels from shoemakers, or you can buy used shoes at charity shops, and have the heels removed by a shoemaker, usually for a small fee.

Materials and Tools

  • 1 heel (from a dress shoe)
  • 1 wooden tile
  • Acrylic paint (her favorite color)
  • Electric drill with a 1-inch drill bit
  • 1 1-inch screw
  • 1 1-inch wall-mounting screw
  • Screwdriver
  • Paintbrush
  • Pencil and ruler
  • Used newspapers

Instructions

  1. Cover work area with old newspapers.
  2. Paint the wooden tile using the acrylic paint and let dry
  3. Once the tile is dry, use a pencil and ruler to find and mark the centre of the tile.
  4. Drill a small hole right through this marked centre.
  5. Mark and drill another hole at the top centre of the tile (for hanging).
  6. To fasten the heel to the tile, first place the heel in the centre of the front of the tile over the hole that was drilled. Working from the back of the tile, fasten the 1-inch screw through the hole in the tile right into the heel.
  7. To hang the heel to a wall or door, determine where the tile will be placed and then use the pencil and ruler to mark the position.
  8. To attach the tile to the wall, fasten the wall-mounting screw through the top hole, which you made in step 5.
  9. Repeat for more heel racks as desired.

Mom will be more than pleased with this unique “gift” and will, no doubt, boast about it to friends and relatives.
